The media can hijack your story to meet their own needs:

Janne in Wollongong facilitated getting their first march off the ground by talking with a few interested women, and then holding a media conference. There had been a couple of really bad incidents involving students. The media wanted the Reclaim the Night Collective members to make statements about the incidents, while the collective sought to broaden the issue. The media still focused on the individual incidents and misinterpreted the background to the march. (See clipping at the end of this section)

"The media has never been on the side of feminists. It portrays women as not being able to do things, for example, it trivialised Women's Lib. Radical issues are misrepresented.  Counteract bad media the best way you can.   If you get a bad media report don't agonise about.... forget about it" Janne, Wollongong

"The media don't give much coverage as RTN is an after hours event."  Wendy, Albury

"I think I'm always disappointed at the media's coverage of  it. It's very minimal coverage, and they either come before the march has assembled or really late, so that they are able to say there were only limited numbers of women attending. So that's always a disappointment." Trish, Albury

It is important to consider the safety and anonymity of survivors in the march, especially with TV cameras and photographers.

"Many women don't want media coverage, and there are problems for the media in covering the march as they can't focus on women's faces, so maybe that's why they are reluctant to cover the march." Trish, Albury
