This can happen in a number of ways:

Reacting to something already in the media

  • ring up radio talk back programs

  •  writing letters to the editor - include your demands

The newspaper clipping from Bathurst (at the end of this section) is a typical piece where women are being asked to limit their behaviour as a result of a local vicious predator, who had been attacking women for a period of 18 months! This article was the first public acknowledgement of his presence in the community and provides plenty of angles for women to follow up and challenge.

Getting your own story up

  •  writing column or news story

  • ringing up news editors or available journalists

  • writing and distributing media releases

"It's good to cultivate contacts in the media - try to get them on your organising committee." Gwen, Dubbo

Timing of a media event is crucial.  Fridays can be bad if stories are carried over to Monday and can compete with other news. Mornings are best, especially for televisions stations who need to get information back to their studios for editing. Find out about deadlines for local papers but as a general rule allow 2-3 days before publication.

The media may not come to the event but may want to do an interview earlier in the day or even earlier in the week.
