Reclaim the Night came out of women's need to challenge:

• male sexual violence against them
• the curfew mentality imposed on all women

Women first took to the streets in 

• Rome in response to alarming increases in reports of sexual assault.  
• Australia in 1978
• Since then, across the globe, in the cities and the regions women have marched under the Reclaim the Night banner to demand universal safety for women from all forms of sexual violence. 

It is an event where women work together:

• for social and political change 
• to uphold women's rights to a life without fear of violence, harassment and sexual assault
