FRIDAY, 29TH OCTOBER 2010 The
Snowy Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, in conjunction with the National
Respite for Carers Program, will be hosting jointly, an information at
Berridale CWA Hall Myack Street from 10am - 12nn. Elder Abuse
hides itself away in our community and largely unreported. It is a
problem that affects the very heart of our families, our older family
members. The session will look at the forms of Elder Abuse, its
effects and how we can act to prevent Elder Abuse. We will also be
looking at it from a Carers perspective and encourage anyone working
with Older community members
to attend. We would like to invite all community members to attend the
session and help us work together to prevent Elder Abuse in the
community. Treating our Elders with dignity is a natural
progression in life, and you do not have to deal with any form of
Violence on your own. Lunch will follow the session. There
is no cost and this session will form the event in which the Snowy
Mountains Neighbourhood Centres highlights Reclaim the Night which is a
global women's protest against men's sexual violence held on the last
Friday in October each year. Contact Narelle (02) 6457 1044

from the fear of violence. We protest for women to have the right to walk
freely at night, free from the threat of rape and sexual violence. There
will be an opportunity to speak out against violence against women. The
march and rally are for women and children only. This symbolises women's
right to walk safely without male protectors and respects the need of some

Warrnambool VIC
Reclaim the Night 2010 Reclaim the Night 2010 in Warrnambool will take
place on Saturday the 30th of October from 10pm until Sunday the 31st of
October. It has been organised by the Women's Action Collective and
symbolises a return to the traditional values of Reclaim the Night.
Reclaim the Night is a protest against men's violence against women and
children which began in Leeds in the 1970's as a result of a magistrate's
comments in concluding a serial rape trial in which he stated that the
only way for women to remain safe was to remain inside their homes.
Reclaim the Night asserts the rights of women to both be and feel safe in
public spaces and to be free from fear of men's violence. Through
discussion with Warrnambool community members it has been discovered that
many women in Warrnambool don't feel safe in public after dark. Even
though we know that a woman is more at risk of violence in her own home
and has a greater chance of being assaulted by someone she knows; being
fearful of being in public limits the rights of women to be active members
of their community. The Reclaim the Night protest in Warrnambool will take
the form of a female only supervised taxi rank for women to leave the
Warrnambool CBD safely. It will involve the Women's Action Collective
collecting women's stories about their experiences of violence, and to
what extent the threat of violence limits their freedom; and education
relating to men's violence against women will also take place. The taxi
rank will be placed in Liebig Street across from the Warrnambool City
Council offices. It will be supervised by security, and tea, coffee and
other refreshments will be provided. For more information please contact
Women's Health Resource Worker Rochelle on 5564 4193
