RTN in the context of
women’s position in our society
www.isis.aust.com/rtn/context.htm
"Violence
is more than the isolated behaviour of individuals. In Australia it is a social
phenomenon supported by the unequal status of men, women and children. RTN recognises that violence is a complex issue combining gender, race,
culture and sexuality. Almost always men are the perpetrators of violence
against women and children. We do also acknowledge that women can be violent and
that violence exists in gay and lesbian relationships ...
We see violence institutionalised within legal, medical, government institutions
and private enterprise." 5
Male
power
"Men
have power over sexuality. We are protesting against the power of male sexual violence .
Men
own the major share of property and resources. Men have economic power, own
property and own women as a commodity. One only has to watch TV to have these
images reinforced in ads. Men
have the power to terrorise women. Again TV news, programs and ads
are full of this - also pornography. Men are portrayed as the heros. Men
have the physical strength. Women are valued for their
femininity (which equals passivity). Men are trained to be stronger than women.
Men are portrayed as human, women aren't.
These are the issues -I'd
like to see these issues being addressed."
