You know there is something empowering about walking down the street of Sydney - there is something really good - makes you feel really good about taking over this city and we put out a special welcome to the men who are here today. We say hello to our lovers, we say hello to our brothers, our husbands, our fathers and our grandfathers, we thank you all for your support today Thankyou. And you know it’s real fine that we women like the simpler things in life so we thank the men for coming today. Our theme today is women unite for justice and native title and it seems to me that we can no longer trust those we gave the vote to for reconciliation, we can no longer trust them. It’s up to us, women of the world to seize the moment - and I tell you that today is the time, now is the time we have to seize the moment we have to take reconciliation forward so stand up women of the world now is the time! And just looking down the list of people who are going to speak to you today, looking down the list of people who are going to sing and shout our stories today, I say we have a diverse nation here - I say that we have a global network of women here so give it up for the women today! A couple of weeks ago I was in India in Veranasie (sp?) and women all over the world have problems, their problem is a really huge one, the Ganges is sick, the goddess is sick and it is the women there who are helping to clean up the river Ganges and they send you their love today so give it up for the women of Verinassi. You know people power is an amazing thing because while I was there the women were getting no chop from the politicians, they were saying the river is really dirty you have got to do something about this and one day they got all these politicians together invited them down to the village and made them stand for half an hour knee deep in shit in polluted water, they made them stand there, women of the world we can make a difference, we can change things - give it up for the women of Verinassi. And we can be as powerful as them. And a very big spiritual thank you to the Jewish women who cannot be with us today but they are here in spirit. Today is their Sabbath - give it up for them too … |
