International Women's Day 1997
WHAT IS A FEMINIST?
WHO IS A FEMINIST?
by Vicki Potempa

Close to 74 - still a fighting 20
She's now over seventy, grey hair and dumpy.

In her early teens she was forced to do house chores for mother
whilst her brothers were at sport or having fun.

Her schooling was not essential.

If luck favoured her, she received a few educational scraps.
Where free tutoring was a prize - she forfeited it for a boy.

Should misfortune strike her family
or a member become ill
sure enough, the young woman was called upon to do her
duty to support and/or nurse parent and sibling.

Her paid work was assessed at seventy-five percent of the mate wage
irrespective of her commitments.

Permanency in employment was lost at marriage
and when pregnant, she was rewarded with the sack

The lovely bride then became a more efficient dishwasher,
laundry expert, nursemaid, etc. etc.

With a bit of bad luck, from a marriage
she endured a terrible time.

Finally she stopped accepting this treatment
as a Woman's Lot

Her experiences consolidated her anger...
she fought for the betterment of Women

And to this day she is fighting injustices.
Yes, you guessed it.
SHE BECAME A FEMINIST!

She's a woman forty-five plus.

She had less opportunity than her male siblings

But, having heard of Women's Lib she endorsed their ideals
and joined WEL

or some other Women's organisation

And joined the fight against the discriminations suffered
by her friends, elder sisters or her mother.

She fought and reaped the benefits of improvements.

She used her talents to help her less fortunate sisters.

Now she ignores the media distortions of Feminist
and remains A FEMINIST and is proud of it.

She's twenty, young and articulate.

Being no smart upstart, she listens
to the tales of Women's fight.

She appreciates her better fortune and remains vigilant.

Above all, she fights to keep what has been won
and uses her talents to improve the lot
of all the women of the world.

Again, you guessed it.
SHE IS A FEMINIST!
